For another year in the Spanish city of Buñol will be held one of the most fun and delicious festivals the world knows. On the last Wednesday of August, La Tomatina gathers thousands of juicy vegetable lovers from Great Britain, Japan, America and Spain to take part in a fun competition.

The festival starts at 10.00. A bunch of trucks arriving at the arena hauling cheap Iberian tomatoes. Tomato targeting begins as soon as a participant manages to climb a greasy wooden pole and grabs the smoked ham hanging from it.

Usually the enthusiast tries to grab the meat for about 15-20 minutes, after which he resigns himself to failure, as in practice this task is almost impossible. Finally comes the beginning of the tomato battle. Each fighter competes only for himself, and the main goal in the game is to entertain the participants.

During Tomatina, competitors are required to wear goggles and rubber gloves to protect themselves from soiling. The more agile and resourceful of them immediately climb on the trailers and get the opportunity to aim at their opponents from above. However, before the tomato can be used as a kind of bomb, it must be crushed by hand.

There is another condition that is not mandatory, and that is to tear the clothes of the other participants in the festival. This is usually not the case, as the holiday is devoid of aggression.

Viewers can only see tomato-stained people fighting in the city streets and bursting into laughter. After they lose their last strength, the festival ends.

Then comes the big cleanup. Many of the buildings are pre-covered with nylon because locals are fully aware of how high tomato grenades can fly. The shafts on the streets are also covered so that they are not clogged with tomato paste.

If there is still tomato juice left somewhere, it is cleaned by firefighters. The whole cleaning procedure after Tomatina takes about three hours, but the time is well worth it, given the cheerful noise that reigns throughout the festival.
