Daily consumption of fresh fruit protects us from cardiovascular disease (CVD) by up to 40%, according to a new study.
A team of scientists from Oxford University in the UK analyzed 451,681 people from 5 rural and 5 urban areas of China. The study's lead author, Dr. Doo, emphasizes that dietary and lifestyle changes are essential to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Studies in China show that the most common cause of these diseases is stroke, while in Western Europe - ischemic heart disease is more common.
And the purpose of the study is to understand how much fruit a day is needed to reduce the risk of heart disease.
The study involved 19,300 volunteers who had no evidence of heart disease. In the beginning, they answered questions such as how much fruit they eat per day. The results showed that the more fruit they consumed each day, the lower the risk of CVD between 25-40%.
The risk of these people from ischemic heart disease decreased by 15%, from ischemic stroke - by 25%, and from hemorrhagic - by up to 40%. The results are based on an average daily intake of 150 grams of fresh fruit.
The researchers also found that those who ate more fresh fruit had lower blood pressure than those who ate less.
And based on these data, the researchers conducted another study involving 61,000 patients with various forms of CVD or high blood pressure. The purpose was to subject them to daily consumption of fruit.
The study showed a reduced risk of up to 32% mortality in participants, as well as a 40% lower increase in fatalities as a result of stroke, and 27% of ischemic heart disease.
Eating fresh fruit is not only healthy, but also very useful for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, is the definite conclusion of experts.
