As of September 1, Russia has completely stopped importing Bulgarian fruits and vegetables. The official statement of the Russian regulator Rosselkhoznadzor states that the restriction applies to products with a phytosanitary certificate issued in Bulgaria.

The reason for the imposed restriction and a letter from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency to the Russian regulator, warning him of the issuance of false quality certificates for food of plant origin.

The phytosanitary certificates in question are issued to products of plant origin in order to ensure that they meet the standards of the country to which they are exported.

The measure, introduced on September 1, is temporary, according to Rosselkhoznadzor, which has announced that it will stop importing not all products with a phytosanitary certificate, but only fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency explained to EkonomikBg that the measure of the Russian regulator was imposed as a result of their warning.

Earlier this week, the BFSA sent a warning note to Rosselkhoznadzor that fake phytosanitary export and re-export certificates issued on behalf of the BFSA had been registered.

This is not the first such ban. At the end of April, Rosselkhoznadzor issued an order banning the import of products re-exported with Bulgarian phytosanitary certificates on suspicion that the goods did not come from Africa and Asia, but from EU member states.
