The Macedonian Food Agency has banned the import of chicken and eggs from Bulgaria, the Macedonian daily Vecer reported.

The main reason for the ban by the Agency was the fact that there is a registered case of bird flu in Bulgaria.

The Macedonian authorities have stated that no cases of bird flu have been registered in their country so far and that the products distributed in the trade network are safe for the citizens.

Two days ago, the first proven case of bird flu was officially registered in Bulgaria. The news was announced by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Tsvetan Dimitrov.

It is a Dalmatian pelican, which was found in the protected area Poda near the city of Burgas.

According to Dr. Gerogi Mitev, who is the director of the Regional Agency for Food Safety - Burgas, this is a single case of a disease with a strain of the H5N1 type, and not an established outbreak.

According to European regulations to limit the possibility of infection with bird flu, infected animals must be destroyed. As a precaution, it is necessary to ban products from the affected areas and the established protection zones.

According to the World Health Organization, with proper preparation of chicken and egg foods, the virus cannot be transmitted to humans.
