This year we will hardly eat Bulgarian fruits and vegetables because of the heavy rains, said Tsvetan Tsekov to Standart, which is the owner of the largest orchards in Bulgaria.

According to Tsekov's data, heavy rains and hail, which have been falling in almost the entire country for months, have scalded about 80% of this year's harvest.

Due to the ruined Bulgarian production this year we will be forced to import fruits and vegetables from abroad.

It is assumed that the stands in our retail chains will offer mainly Greek and Turkish fruits and vegetables.

According to the Association of Agricultural Producers in Bulgaria, currently about 80% of the fruits and vegetables on the stands are from other countries, as our products are of much lower quality.

Most Bulgarian cherries, for example, have rotted because of the rains. The same happens with apples, apricots, pears, peaches, which are completely destroyed by torrential rains.

Most of the cucumbers and tomatoes also did not survive the torrential rains, which is why they will be imported from our neighboring countries.

The torrents have led to heavy losses for home agriculture this year. The farmers explain that the damage will also affect the next harvest, as the rains have caused various diseases on the fruit trees, which will damage the next fruits.

Agronomist Svetla Lipova told the media that even if the trees are saved this year, in the next two years they will continue to produce poor quality fruit.

According to the local farmers, this year they are working at a loss, as they invest a lot of money to save their plantations, from which they do not expect serious income.

Farmers are also dissatisfied with the delayed funding from the Agriculture Fund, which had to invest in dozens of projects under the Rural Development Program.

So far, no funding has been made to support Bulgarian farmers, but Minister Dimitar Grekov has promised that the sector will make the necessary investments to survive.
