In the last 10 years, cheese production in the country has decreased by 16,000 tons, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In 2008 the dairies in our country produced 73,026 tons of cheese, and 10 years later the volume dropped to 57,577 tons.
The statistics are alarming because after Bulgaria became a member of the European Union, it was forced to limit exports of white brined cheese.
At the same time, milk production fell. In the last year, dairies in our country have reported 600,914 tons of fresh milk, and 10 years ago this amount was 718,018 tons.
According to the ministry, 146,114 tons of fermented milk, 70.9 million liters of liquid packaged milk and 24,458 tons of yellow cheese were produced in the country last year.
These figures show that the amount of fermented milk is increasing. Yellow cheese production has also grown by just over 4,000 tonnes in recent years.
However, melted and smoked cheeses have the largest growth in dairy products. In the last 2 years, 40% more processed and smoked cheeses have been produced for our market compared to the last decade.
The data also show that in our country are imported mainly concentrated milk, milk and cream powder, as well as milk concentrate from EU member states.
