The number of overweight children in Bulgaria is about 30 percent, which is less than in recent years, said Dr. Veselka Duleva, a national consultant at the Ministry of Health.

At a round table on Healthy Eating, the expert also said that children suffering from obesity in our country are between 12 and 15%.

According to the World Health Organization, one in three children in Europe has weight problems. The situation in Bulgaria is similar.

A total of 13 national surveys have been conducted since 1997. They collected information about the diet of Bulgarians and its impact on weight. Research shows that results have improved over the past year.

For the period between 1998 and 2008 we had a double increase in the obesity of children, and even 5-year-olds suffered from overweight. From 2008 to 2013 there was a retention of this negative trend, said Dr. Duleva.

However, the conclusions are that since 2016 the kids in our country eat healthier and this has a positive effect on their weight.

At the round table, parents asked the expert for comment on the snacks served to their children, Dr. Veselka Duleva replied that these foods were not consulted with the Ministry of Health, because they are under the MES program.

According to the specialist, there are 3 approved national regulations for healthy eating - for kindergartens, nurseries and schools. They set out the criteria and offer over 400 recipes in which the amounts of salt, sugar and fat are limited.

Each recipe calculates the exact amount of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that are important for children's nutrition.

The creation of an identification logo to show how healthy a product is according to these parameters is also being discussed.
