The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency seized nearly 10 tons of genetically modified soybeans sold in Burgas. Studies have shown that the content of GMOs exceeds the standards by 5%.
This is contrary to the rules for GMO products on the Bulgarian markets. In addition, the excess of the nailed norm is not noted anywhere on the label, which is the second violation of market policy in our country.
Genetically modified soy does not pose any danger to human health, the Agency reassures. The goods were seized because they misled consumers.
The unregulated soybean was found during an inspection by the inspectors from the Regional Directorate of the BFSA in Burgas. Their inspection is in implementation of the National Program for Control of Genetically Modified Foods.
GMO soy was produced in Ukraine. All available quantities of it in the commercial network will be withdrawn, and the violators will be issued an act of administrative violation under the Food Act.
A fine of between BGN 50,000 and 70,000 for the legal entity is also envisaged.
For the time being, the seized quantity is only prohibited for sale, and in order to return to the market, the owner will have to repack it, announcing the exact content of the GMO. Otherwise the soybeans will be destroyed.
According to the Food Act, products containing GMOs above 0.9% must indicate this amount on the labels.
In the warehouse of the company were found several bags with different blanks by weight of the same soybean - ground into flour, salted and unsalted, with a total amount of over 6,500 kilograms.
There is currently a debate throughout the European Union about GMOs grown in the territory of the member states. The Bulgarian side has already stated that they are against the cultivation of genetically modified crops in our country.
