Today marks the International Day against Obesity. The obesity of the people of developed countries is increasingly gaining the scale of a global pandemic.

Being overweight is not just an aesthetic problem. Obesity is primarily a social and medical problem that affects all social strata of modern society.

"Half of humanity is dying of hunger, the other half is on a diet." - The words of the prominent Bulgarian playwright and writer Stefan Tsanev uttered back in 1991 turned out to be prophetic.

According to the World Health Organization, between 30 and 80% of adults in European countries suffer from varying degrees of obesity.

The statistics for children are particularly worrying - 20 percent of Europeans are overweight and ΒΌ of them are obese. In numbers - 14 million children are overweight, 3 million of these children are obese.

Experts warn that if the trend of increasing obesity continues, we will be the first generation whose parents will outlive it. This will be a direct result of our diet.

Bulgaria is no exception to the general European trends. Data from surveys conducted in our country show that 2 million of adult Bulgarian citizens are overweight. 1 million are Bulgarians who suffer from obesity. 200,000 Bulgarian children carry the burden of excess weight, and 67,000 Bulgarian children are obese.

Compared to other countries in the European Union, Bulgaria ranks sixth in childhood obesity and overweight. The sad data show that this year every third Bulgarian first grader has suffered from overweight.
