Today marks the International Day against Obesity. The obesity of the people of developed countries is increasingly gaining the scale of a global pandemic.
Being overweight is not just an aesthetic problem. Obesity is primarily a social and medical problem that affects all social strata of modern society.
"Half of humanity is dying of hunger, the other half is on a diet." - The words of the prominent Bulgarian playwright and writer Stefan Tsanev uttered back in 1991 turned out to be prophetic.
According to the World Health Organization, between 30 and 80% of adults in European countries suffer from varying degrees of obesity.
The statistics for children are particularly worrying - 20 percent of Europeans are overweight and ΒΌ of them are obese. In numbers - 14 million children are overweight, 3 million of these children are obese.
Experts warn that if the trend of increasing obesity continues, we will be the first generation whose parents will outlive it. This will be a direct result of our diet.
Bulgaria is no exception to the general European trends. Data from surveys conducted in our country show that 2 million of adult Bulgarian citizens are overweight. 1 million are Bulgarians who suffer from obesity. 200,000 Bulgarian children carry the burden of excess weight, and 67,000 Bulgarian children are obese.
Compared to other countries in the European Union, Bulgaria ranks sixth in childhood obesity and overweight. The sad data show that this year every third Bulgarian first grader has suffered from overweight.
Obesity and overweight lead to a number of additional and potentially deadly diseases. Excess weight is among the main reasons for the increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders and others.
Bulgaria celebrates World Obesity Day by conducting a number of initiatives to prevent overweight and increase the culture of nutrition.
From October 30 to November 3, free measurements of weight, fat mass, and cardiovascular risk assessment will be organized for everyone within the Alley of Health initiative.
The Bulgarian Association for Combating Overweight organizes the presentation of new dietary products and food supplements that can be used for both prevention and treatment of obesity and its accompanying complications.
The Medical University of Sofia, which is a partner in a major international project to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes, will recruit participants for a medical study.
Applicants must be overweight and at increased risk of developing diabetes. As part of the study, which will last 3 years, their health will be under constant medical control, and for the first three months they will receive free dietary supplements.
Sofia will host the 17th World Congress of Nutrition, which will be attended by 358 delegates from 19 countries. Leading specialists in the field of nutrition and nutrition will give a series of lectures related to the prevention of childhood obesity, modern dietetics and innovations in the field of nutrition science.
