October 24 has been declared International Obesity Day and therefore launched a series of campaigns aimed at maintaining a healthy weight and weight loss.

Data from the National Anti-Obesity Forum in the UK and Belgium show that more and more people are overweight, with the number of obese people increasing.

Today's initiatives aim to raise awareness of the life-threatening dangers of being overweight, as well as to offer effective and healthy weight loss methods.

The emphasis will be on a healthy diet and physical activity. According to recent studies, there is a worrying trend among both older and younger generations of sedentary lifestyles.

There has been a sharp decline in physical activity, with children from European countries exercising between 30 and 80 percent less, leading to a 20 percent increase in overweight in adolescents.

In Bulgaria, nearly 2 million of the adult population are overweight, and half of them are obese. Children in our country who struggle with obesity exceed 200,000, and 67,000 of them are obese.

The main factors that cause weight gain are harmful eating habits, low physical activity and family burden. It has been established that with the increase in weight, the health risks also increase.

The most common diseases associated with overweight are diabetes, cardiovascular disease and diseases of the digestive system. Gaining weight increases the risk of hypertension by up to 6 times.

The most effective method of reducing excess weight is a complete lifestyle change. This includes diets, daily exercise, and in some cases drug therapy.
