Today, the International Coffee Day is celebrated in many places around the world. Coffee, called the fuel invention of Satan, is widely popular among all nations and is undoubtedly the most addictive hot beverage. But how did it come about?
A very old legend says that in the Ethiopian mountains a goatherd named Caldi found that goats became quite vital after eating the leaves of a certain tree. Caldi explained his discovery to the abbot of the local monastery, and the two decided to make a drink from the seeds of the same tree. Thus, the invigorating properties of coffee were first discovered, and it soon spread to the Arab world.
People started cultivating it and selling it. Gradually, drinking a hot beverage became a tradition and this led to the opening of a number of cafes called qahveh Khaneh.
By the middle of the 17th century, coffee began to be drunk throughout Europe. There, however, it is insulted by Venetian priests, who say it is a real bitter invention of Satan. Their opinion is so controversial that Pope Clement VIII has to allow the free use of the tonic.
Despite the controversy in the big cities of Austria, England, France, Germany and the Netherlands, cafes are fast becoming the best places for communication and social activities.
As we know, to this day these places have an important role, because in them people can talk, play games or watch TV. Because of coffee, Penny universities appeared in England, so named, because for a penny one can take a cup of coffee and engage in conversation.
Today, coffee is grown in Asia, Africa, Central and South America, the islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Undoubtedly, however, Brazil remains the leader in the coffee bean trade. Between 17,000,000 and 20,000,000 tons are exported from there in one year.
The most famous varieties of coffee are Robusta and Arabica, and Satan's most expensive bitter invention is grown in Indonesia and is called Kopi Luwak.
