Nearly 30 tons of illegal chicken meat from Poland have been stopped by the local police, the press center of the Ministry of Interior announced. The smuggled goods were seized on February 10.

The truck had a Polish registration and appeared at the Oryahovo border checkpoint for transit. The place was sent by a Polish company.

The border guards doubted the correctness of the data filled in the transport documents to the goods and immediately submitted information to the Coordination Center in the CDCOC.

A closer inspection revealed that the Polish driver could not provide documents on the origin of the chicken he was transporting. The goods were detained near Novi Iskar.

More officers of the Interior Ministry, experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and the Customs Agency arrived on the scene.

The latest data on the market in our country show that chicken is the most consumed meat. According to Eurostat, 102,000 tons of poultry, 90,000 tons of pork and about 5,000 tons of beef were produced in Bulgaria.

The most sought after by Bulgarian households is chicken. In second place is minced meat and pork, and the most drastically reduced consumption of beef.

Due to higher demand, meat production in Bulgaria is expected to reach 300-350 thousand tons by 2010.
