During the mass inspections around the Christian holiday St. Nicholas Day, employees of the Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (NAFA) in Varna seized 2 tons of illegal fish from the markets in our sea capital.

The head of the department at the local agency, Beyhan Hasanov, said 206kg of turbot and 1.6 tonnes of illegal fish of other species had been caught.

56 acts have been drawn up for administrative violations, 2 of which are for catching and transporting turbot during the prohibition period. The allowed quota for this year's turbot catch in Varna is 18,709 kilograms, and so far it has been fulfilled at 70%.

Hasanov explained that ships that have fulfilled their quota will receive additional permits until its full implementation. This year, 57 vessels have a fishing permit.

The Food Safety Agency recently announced that it will draw up a "black list" of producers and traders who systematically offer low-quality food.

This is part of the measures for enhanced control, which the agency launched before the holidays, as employees promised to carry out active and intensified inspections during the holiday period, when the purchase of food increases.

The executive director of the agency Plamen Mollov announced that this campaign will continue until Jordan's Day.

The large turnover around the Christmas holidays often tempts traders to break the law, and the consumer must have guarantees for the safety and quality of the food he buys.

Customers can submit signals and complaints about low-quality products around the clock to the hotline of the service - 0700 122 99.

Lubomir Kulinski, director of Food Control, also advised Bulgarian consumers to buy meat and fish only from regulated markets.
