A shipment of Colombian bananas was confiscated by Portuguese law enforcement because cocaine was found in the fruit. Bananas with cocaine were also found in local supermarkets.
Some of the boxes of bananas that contained the drug were placed in food chains.
Judicial police say they found a total of 198 packages of exotic fruits, containing nearly 237 kilograms of cocaine.
Police found that the drugs were actually destined for Spain, but a mistake was made in Portugal and some of the cartons were delivered to shops in the north of the country.
The report to the authorities was submitted by a customer who found the drug in one of the bananas he bought from a store in Portugal.
Last year, packages of 66 kilograms of cocaine were found in several boxes of bananas that were to be delivered to a food chain in Belgium.
The bananas with drugs were delivered to six stores of the chain in different parts of Belgium. The value of the cocaine was estimated at 3.2m euros.
According to the Belgian police, it is most likely a mistake in a drug trafficking scheme. The shipment passed through the port of Antwerp and was transported by land by a local company.
The investigation did not reveal whether any of the food chain employees were involved in the case, as some workers claimed that this was not the first supply of drugs to the store.
In this case, the customers of the store did not have contact with the drug, as it was found immediately after opening the boxes of bananas.
In 2012, a consignment of bananas with cocaine had again landed in Belgium through the port of Antwerp, which is believed to have a drug distribution network.
Eight tons of cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas were then seized. The fruit was delivered from Ecuador, with police arresting four Dutch people.
So far, this is the largest amount of cocaine delivered in Europe by fruit.
