Eduard Stoychev, the former chairman of the State Commission on Commodity Wrinkles and Markets, urged not to be misled by the tempting appearance of lacquered and painted oranges, because, in addition to being dangerous, they are also more expensive.

The expert told the Telegraf newspaper that at the moment oranges in our country are sold for an average of BGN 1.20 per kilogram, and the increase is due to the perfect appearance that traders strive for.

The same happens with grapefruits, whose shelf life increases three times after painting and varnishing.

Tangerines are about 30% more expensive, which is between 50 and 60 stotinki per kilogram, and for lemons the price increases by an average of 60 stotinki per kilogram.

The purpose of treating fruits with paints and varnishes is to increase the shelf life and good commercial appearance, explains Eduard Stoychev.

Not only citrus fruits in the domestic markets are painted and varnished. And with apples, many growers treat the fruit to sell better.

At least half of the fruits in our markets are processed paints and varnishes, and then baked in special machines at 28 degrees Celsius. This increases the suitability of fruits transported over long distances.

This technique is allowed by the European Union, but there are certain standards that the food industry is obliged to comply with. Experts add that those varnished fruits are dangerous, for which it is not known what chemicals they have been treated with.

Such fruits are imported illegally, and they come to our markets mostly from neighboring Turkey. For this reason, Dr. Sergei Ivanov from the Center for Food Biology advises to wash the fruit thoroughly, whether you eat them peeled or peeled.

Over 1,000 tons of lemons imported from Turkey and treated with dangerous pesticides were destroyed last year.
