More than 30 tonnes of illegal etol alcohol, which was most likely to be used to make vodka, were seized in a warehouse in Sofia following an operation by the Customs and SANS.
The action took place on Tuesday night, as the officers checked the room after a signal was given, which said that a large amount of illegal alcohol was stored there.
The alcohol was prepared for the production of illegal alcohol with a high degree, mostly vodka and brandy, intended for distribution in the trade and restaurant network during the holidays.
The large amount of ethyl alcohol was stored in plastic bottles of 5 liters. Another large part of the counterfeit alcohol was stored in one-ton tanks.
The unpaid excise duty on the counterfeit alcohol is estimated at BGN 326,000, according to the Customs Agency. Now the owners who kept it will face a fine of double the unpaid excise duty.
Three Bulgarians were arrested for the criminal activity, and the Sofia Prosecutor's Office also took up the case. It is not yet known where the tons of alcohol came from and where they were intended.
Experts have commented that with such a large amount of ethyl alcohol, 70,000 liters of concentrate could be produced - most likely vodka. This makes 1,400,000 glasses of 50 grams of fake alcohol, which would be sold on holidays.
Around the holidays, the counterfeit vodka would have been sold at an even higher price, so if a small vodka is now paid between BGN 4 and 5, around Christmas and New Year, customers could pay between BGN 5 and 7 for alcohol.
It is very likely that counterfeit alcohol was intended for distribution in our hotels and restaurants, as such cases are not uncommon during the pre-holiday period.
In addition to the illegal alcohol, 500 liters of marine fuel were found in the warehouse, which was not intended for the production of alcohol, but was also stored without any documents of origin.
