More than fifty kilograms of beef were seized from an illegal site in Kuklen, said the director of the Regional Directorate of the Food Safety Agency, Dr. Nikolay Petkov.
The site was inspected jointly with Economic Police officers earlier this month. The found meat was confiscated to be destroyed in a slaughterhouse. An act of a natural person has been drawn up in the case. The same person will have to pay a fine of BGN 1,000.
Strict inspections of fruits and vegetables are now being carried out in conjunction with tax inspectors. No major violations were registered among the inspected canneries. Two prescriptions have been issued for the building stock and the labeling of food products on the territory of the municipalities of Asenovgrad and Maritsa, said Dr. Nikolay Petkov.
The specialist also commented on bluetongue. He pointed out that in connection with the spread of the disease in the Plovdiv region there are 500 dead animals. We are currently working on the documents for payment of compensations for the breeders and a decrease in the morbidity is expected.
Bluetongue is a non-contagious viral disease in domestic and wild ruminants. The disease most commonly affects sheep. In blue tongue, erosions and ulcerations of the oral mucosa are observed. Typical signs are shortness of breath and lameness. In some strains, the mortality rate in sheep can be as high as 70 percent.
In cattle, the disease is mostly subclinical. The only signs are a change in the number of leukocytes and fluctuations in body temperature. Very rarely, moderate hyperemia and ulceration in the oral cavity, hyperemia along the gingival margin of the hooves, hypersensitivity and dermatitis are observed.
The spread of the disease can be controlled by disinsecting with a mosquito repellent that transmits the disease to stables, manures and areas around drinking troughs.
In connection with the disease, the Ministry has published a list of telephone numbers for the whole country to which citizens can report sick and dead animals from the Blue Tongue disease.
