Europol, the European Police Office, has detained 66 people in connection with the sale of horse meat that is unfit for human consumption. All their property was confiscated and their bank accounts were seized, Reuters reports.

These measures came after European consumers were unpleasantly surprised in 2013 by the fact that they bought horse meat offered to them as beef.

Tests conducted in Ireland have clearly shown that the content described on the label is not true. Products labeled as beef were made entirely from horse meat.

The first investigation team was organized in Spain. There it was found that Portuguese horses were slaughtered in several slaughterhouses and the meat was sold as beef, some of which had been stale, making it unfit for consumption.

The group exported the meat to Belgium, and from there it traveled to other EU member states. The group's torturer was arrested in Belgium.

In Spain, 65 people will be held accountable for both the fraud with the exchanged meat and the cruel treatment of animals.

Documents for a crime against public health, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization have been provided to justice, according to Europol.

The investigation also found that 5% of the beef products tested in the EU tested positive for horse DNA.
