Switzerland has announced that it is suspending imports of pork from some European countries, including Bulgaria, over fears that our meat is infected with the dangerous African swine flu.

The Swiss food safety authorities have banned the import of pork from Bulgaria, Romania and some regions of Latvia and Croatia. The ban takes effect this Wednesday.

The new provision will cover both pork and all products made from it.

African swine fever has been a widespread contagion in the Balkans, Russia and the Caucasus region since 2007 and is endemic to areas of Africa according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The disease was discovered in late June in Latvia, when three wild boars were found dead near the border with Belarus. Earlier this year, cases were registered in Poland and Lithuania.

It is believed that the infection started this year from Belarus.

Swiss authorities say they will freeze pork imports to Eastern Europe for now until the epidemic is contained so as to stop the spread of the flu.

Since January this year, Russia has also imposed stricter measures on pork imports because of the danger of African infection.

The Bulgarian side has also taken measures against the spread of African plague.

Earlier this year, an order was passed in Vidin to step up border controls to restrict pork imports.

"The disease is not dangerous to humans, but due to the easy spread of the virus among animals, it can cause great social and economic losses," said the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

The competent authorities also add that the veterinarians in the country monitor all pig farms in the country.

Dr. Tsvetan Topchiev from the Directorate of the Food Safety Agency in Vidin said that all farmers in the country have been notified of the symptoms of African plague and according to the instructions when registering such a case should immediately inform the competent authorities in the country.
