Early this morning, uniformed officers of the General Directorate of Police, the specialized prosecutor's office, customs officers and experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) and the National Revenue Agency attacked offices and production bases of meat traders in Petrich.
The exact purpose or reason for the massive action of the police is still unclear. According to the director of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety, Dr. Mihail Bashtavelov, it is most likely smuggled meat or meat products from infected animals.
The experts from the BFSA and the National Revenue Agency, accompanied by uniformed police officers, are checking a list of certain companies in Petrich, after a signal was submitted to the General Directorate of the Police in Sofia.
According to acquaintances, the action of the Bulgarian services is a result of an illegal slaughterhouse discovered somewhere on the territory of the European Union, which was found to have produced and exported meat to Bulgaria and the countries of the Arab world.
Following a special operation by European veterinary services and Interpol staff, the illegal slaughterhouse was closed.
In the ensuing investigation, the European services found that some of the unfit meat had been exported to Bulgaria.
Tracking the shipment with potentially dangerous to human health meat and meat products has led the investigating companies to several companies in Petrich.
The meat in question is imported illegally on the territory of our country, commented employees of the Police Directorate. This was necessitated by the additional secondment of experts from the Customs Agency and the National Revenue Agency. Work on the case continues.
