The mother-of-pearl / Ruta graveolens / is a perennial herbaceous plant with a characteristic unpleasant odor. It reaches a height of 50 to 80 cm and belongs to the Sedefchevi family. His homeland is considered to be the lands near the Mediterranean Sea. It is grown in Asia and Europe, and in our country it is mainly distributed in the Middle Rhodopes, Southeastern and Northeastern Europe. The mother-of-pearl can be found under the name Lazy Sun.

The healing properties of mother of pearl are known from the works of Ovid, Pliny the Elder and Dioscurid. From ancient times to the present day, the peoples of Europe have considered mother of pearl to be an invaluable tool in the treatment of diseased eyes. People believed that where the mother-of-pearl grows, there are no insects or snakes.

The mother-of-pearl grows in stony, dry and rocky places, hidden in bushes. As a garden plant it is very common.
