People who do not eat meat are less likely to develop diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A study showing that vegetarians have a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease took many factors into account.
The researchers took into account factors such as blood pressure, weight, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels. Compared to people who eat meat, vegetarians do not suffer from high blood pressure, are rarely overweight, their blood sugar levels are normal, their cholesterol is lower.
Only 23 percent of vegetarians may develop a risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, but this is due to a number of other factors related to their lifestyle and diet.
The research examined the eating and living habits of over 700 adults. According to their diet, they were divided into vegetarians, semi-vegetarians and meat consumers. Vegetarians are at the lowest risk of diabetes, heart disease and overweight.
They are followed by semi-vegetarians who eat fish, eggs and dairy products. The highest risk is in people who regularly eat meat and meat products.
People who eat mostly meat have high blood pressure as well as high blood sugar. This in itself increases the risk of developing diabetes or some kind of cardiovascular disease.
Even with age in people who do not eat meat, the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes does not increase.
Experts do not recommend giving up meat to those who can not do without it. But it is good to eat less red meat, to avoid fatty meat and, if possible, to eat meat from free-range animals that have had the opportunity to graze fresh grass on a regular basis.
Vegetarians, on the other hand, can often have health problems because they do not provide their body with enough protein by losing meat. Therefore, they should emphasize cereals and rice.
