A new study shows that daily consumption of watermelon protects against cardiovascular disease by stopping the accumulation of bad cholesterol and reducing weight.
The researchers performed the experiment on mice that ate foods high in fat. They found that watermelon reduced ½ accumulated low-density lipoprotein LDL - a form of cholesterol that leads to clogged arteries and heart disease.
Researchers at Pardew University in the United States also concluded that regular consumption of watermelon helps control weight and reduces the retention of fat in blood vessels. These effects of watermelon are due to the chemical citrulline, which is also found in other fruit juices.
In previous studies, citrulline played a major role in preventing heart disease by helping to lower blood pressure.
The current study by US scientists found no significant effect on blood pressure, at the expense of a strong impact on other factors that pose a risk of heart disease.
How did the scientists proceed during the study itself? They fed two groups of mice products containing high levels of fat. One group was given water, the other - watermelon juice. The condition of the rodents was monitored for several months.
At the end of the experiment, they found that mice that consumed watermelon juice had 50% less LDL than others that drank water. Moreover, the first group of mice weighed an average of 30% less weight, although there was no difference in blood pressure.
