Chicory salad, in addition to keeping you slimmer and fitter, can also protect you from dementia, scientists say. Some components of this vegetable serve as a means of preventing memory loss - one of the earliest signs of the disease.
The acid contained in chicory can help prevent the formation of lumps, also known as amyloid plaques in the brain. They are considered a hallmark of the disease, which affects the brain's ability to function effectively.
Experts also believe that the substance, which can be found in lettuce and dandelion, can be used in the future to prevent the accumulation of such plaques.
Chinese scientists have discovered after a series of studies that chicory acid works by blocking harmful processes in the brain that cause amyloid plaques. The formations themselves appear in the protein folds of the brain. They have a toxic effect on the main organ, which causes memory loss itself.
To study mainly the effects of the acid, the experts used three groups of laboratory mice. Lipopolysaccharide was added to the menu of the former, chicory acid was given to the latter, and a combination of the two substances was added to the latter.
After two weeks, the researchers studied the ability of rodents to remember how to go the most direct route to their food, while avoiding certain obstacles. Mice that had lipopolysaccharides in their bodies did the worst. It took them the longest time to find the right platform to get to their food.
Respectively, the mice, which received a combination of the two substances, solved their tasks by about 24% faster. And the representatives of the third group, who took only chicory acid, did 64% better than the first group.
In a previous study, researchers at Youngling University found that the average person is more likely to develop dementia after the age of 60 than people born with the specific gene that causes it. Now they hope to develop an effective remedy based on chicory acid to prevent its occurrence at all.
