The salt, or as it is chemically called sodium chloride (Na Cl), consists of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. Salt binds water in the body, and the intake of large amounts of sodium chloride accelerates the increase in blood mass, the tendency of blood vessels to narrow and leads to an increase in blood pressure.

With such systemic salting of food, the risk of hypertension and subsequently - of stroke or heart attack increases many times over. On the other hand, excessive use of salt leads to the retention of more water in the body, as well as toxins.

This impedes the work of the heart, liver and kidneys, leads to impaired vision, can cause obesity and diseases such as chronic gastritis, osteoporosis, Meniere's syndrome, stomach cancer, cirrhosis of the liver and others.

The daily dose for an adult is no more than 5 g (= 1 tsp) or 2 g of sodium. However, most of us exceed these norms many times over. It is extremely important to learn to control its intake.

One way to do this is to give up the bad habit of additionally salting food. When preparing certain dishes, we should not overdo the amount of salt we add.

It is good to limit the use of ready-made salty products, such as chips, snacks, as well as the many semi-finished products available on the market.

Salt is an integral part of the Bulgarian table, even when it is not necessary. In the fight against excessive salt consumption, it would be good to get rid of this habit. When we do not see it before our eyes, we will not want it.

Complete abstinence from salt is not recommended. It can be done only under the supervision of a doctor, due to certain problematic conditions.
