Eating at home keeps you thin and protects you from diabetes. A new study from Harvard Medical School shows that people who have lunch and dinner at home are much healthier and only 10% of them are overweight, unlike restaurant lovers. People who eat homemade food are also about 25% less likely to develop diabetes, the researchers said.
The study also shows that the general health of people who return to their homes during lunch breaks is many times better than that of their colleagues. According to Harvard scientists, this is due to several reasons. First, in most cases, home-cooked food is much healthier, people are also much less likely to drink sugary sodas at home, and last but not least, physical activity while walking home has an impact.
The study was conducted on the occasion of the avalanche of diagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes. The dangerous disease, which is fed by obesity, eats an average of 10% of the health care budget of each European country. It causes a number of complications such as stroke and heart attacks, blindness and circulatory problems leading to amputations.
The author of the study is Gang Zong. He and his team came to their conclusions by studying the eating habits of nearly 100,000 men and women under the age of 26. The volunteers were interviewed about their diets, lifestyle and places where they usually have lunch and dinner. Absolutely all of them were undiagnosed with diabetes at the beginning of the study, but at the end of the study, more than 9,000 participants developed type 2 disease.
The analysis found that people who ate at home were much less at risk for diabetes. Those who dined five to seven times at home had a 15 percent lower chance of developing the condition. People who ate lunch at home three to five times a week had a 25% lower chance of developing diabetes.
90% of those who loved family dinners were also not overweight. An interesting fact was that women are much more likely to eat healthily and exercise than men. However, there is an important note in the study. Its results do not apply to people who cook semi-finished and pre-prepared food, but only to those who prepare a traditional dinner with unprocessed products.
