A scientist from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences warns that one of the most sought after and consumed mushrooms in our country - mouse mushroom, is toxic, and its consumption can damage the whole body.
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences adds that Chinese scientists have managed to extract a whole set of toxins from the popular mushroom, which can cause irreparable damage to the human body, and in some cases even death.
The mouse fungus is most common in pine forests in spring and autumn. Until now it is considered edible and is preferred by many fungi not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe.
However, scientists are adamant that this mushroom should not be eaten because it causes severe kidney damage and can lead to death.
"So far, the concentrations above which the substances cause this problem are not well understood and there is probably an individual reaction as well," said Boris Assov, chief assistant at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, to Bulgarian National Radio.
Currently in Bulgaria there is an approved list of poisonous mushrooms that should not be consumed. However, experts explain that this list has not been updated since the 60s of last century.
This list, for example, does not include lemongrass, which has long been found to be poisonous.
Assistant Chief Asyov says this is one of the main issues that needs to be addressed in the future. It is necessary to find a mechanism through which the information is updated every year.
The expert also advises mushroom pickers to check before picking mushrooms.
In our country grow 200 species of edible mushrooms, described in Bulgarian books. It is recommended to get acquainted with mushrooms before consuming them, because the most common food poisonings in the country occur with them.
Only a few days ago, a 9-year-old girl was admitted to a hospital in Gotse Delchev with mushroom poisoning. His child underwent immediate lavage and is now in stable condition.
