Wine production in the lands of Bulgaria can be traced back to ancient times. Although the method of production and technology have changed over the years, the varieties from which the famous Bulgarian wine is produced have been preserved. The experts are unanimous that in Bulgaria there are good grape varieties for both white and red wine, as well as traditions in wine production. Here are the most basic of them:
Mavrud
Mavrud is one of the oldest grape varieties in our lands. It is a little known fact that it is grown only in Bulgaria. It is recognizable by the small round grains with thick skin and high sugar content. Its specificity is that it matures later than the other varieties, and the wine produced by it has a deep ruby color and an unforgettable aroma, which becomes denser with time.
Muscat
There are several varieties of this grape variety. These are Danube Muscat, Muscat Kailashki, Muscat Otonel, Muscat Red and others. It is generally distributed throughout the country and its local names are Tarnova in Shumen region, Romashtina in Tarnovo region, Blue violet in Vratsa region. Although it is a red variety, it is used to make white wine. It has a deep yellow color and exceptional aroma. Mixing it with the Dimyat variety produces an incredibly dry wine.
They smoke
This grape variety is distributed almost throughout the Balkans. Dimyat is a late ripening, dessert variety. Its skin is thin, the color - yellow-green. Smoke is used in the production of white table wines.
Ruby
A wonderful red wine is produced from Rubina. It has a rich taste. It is extremely fragrant and sweet, containing high levels of tannin. This variety produces a wonderful sweet and semi-sweet wine, which has a dark ruby color. The variety is purely Bulgarian and was created in Pleven in 1944.
Shiroka Melnishka Loza
This old Bulgarian variety ripens late and is harvested in October. It is found worldwide only in the valley of the river Struma. The grains of this variety are small and sweet. The more the wine made from Shiroka Melnishka matures, the more complex aroma it acquires.
Pamid
From this old grape variety, grown since the Thracians, red wine is produced. It was once grown only in Bulgaria, but is now widespread in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Romania and Hungary. The variety is characterized by good sugar content and low acidity. It produces red table wine suitable for mass consumption.
Keratsuda
This grape variety is grown in southwestern Bulgaria. It is used to make white table wines, which make good liqueur wines.
