Herring, which is called sea silver, is as expensive today as other fish, but was once the cheapest and most affordable fish in Norway; her presence at the table was constant.

At Christmas, lutefisk is offered - dried cod, soaked in a solution of caustic soda and served with pork greaves and stewed peas. According to a saying, fish like to swim even in the stomach, so fish dishes are traditionally served with a lot of beer.

The most common meat is mutton. It is used to prepare stewed meat with cabbage and boiled potatoes, smoked leg (fenalor) and the Christmas dish Pinekyot (lamb ribs).

There is enough game in the forests - partridges, deer, elk and others. Venison is eaten only on holidays and in restaurants, as its preparation is very time consuming and requires special skills.

For dessert on special occasions they make rice cream. Another favorite dessert is Girl with a Veil. Baked and peeled apples are smashed for it. Sprinkle crushed butter biscuits on a row of apple puree. Top with whipped cream.

Then add apple puree, biscuits and so on until the ingredients are done. The cake can be eaten immediately or after standing in the freezer and turned into an ice cream cake.
