The population of the Black Sea mackerel, which was located on the territory of the Black Sea, is already past. These are the words of the hydrobiologist and ichthyologist Pencho Pandakov, an expert, a member of the Balkanka Association.

The hydrobiologist also notes that there is no other than mackerel two species of sturgeonwho inhabited the waters of the Danube.

Padakov also drew attention to the fact that in addition to the mentioned species, there are others that are threatened with extinction.

Of the 6 species of sturgeon in the Danube - two have already disappeared, three are critically endangered and one species is only endangered, Pandakov explained. He also shared that these species were among the first inhabitants of the species in terms of their evolution. They were also the most sought after and valuable, as they are used to produce black caviar, the price of which is quite high.

The eel is also at risk of extinction in its native waters. The problem with it is that it breeds near Latin America in the Sargasso Sea. Thanks to the water currents, the larvae reach our continent, entering our rivers and river lakes, where their home is. The hydrobiologist gave an example with the Straldzha marsh, leading on the largest scale in the country where the eels are already extinct.

The main species that was hunted in commercial fishing was the eel. Along the Yantra River, it reached Veliko Tarnovo, and in the riparian wetlands of Yantra they were mainly dominant, but it has already disappeared from there, the expert added.

The specialist explained that the main reason for the extinction of these fish are the hydroelectric power plants under construction, which change the habitats of the species, and also a factor are the polluted waters and the corrections of the riverbeds. Fish species that have already suffered from this are the Balkan melon, goulash and some species of pinchers. The reason for the decrease in the population is mainly in the highly polluted waters, as well as in the human intervention and correction of the rivers.

The problem of protecting river dwellers is very serious and threatens a large number of migratory fish. Due to human negligence, these species are prevented from reaching places where they breed and survive. One of the endangered species are the lampreys inhabiting the waters of the Danube River. Their species is seriously endangered, as single specimens of the species have been observed in the last 30 years.

The hydrobiologist also shared that in the Pchelina dam, as a result of the hydroelectric power plant operating near the territory, all the fish had died within a radius of 5 km. Before the water power plant was activated, the Struma goulash was common in the area.
