Drinking cold beer and eating sprats are among the traditional holiday activities of Bulgarian beachgoers. This summer, however, the Bulgarian's favorite small fish seems to have disappeared from the restaurants.
The restaurants in the resorts near our sea capital tried this season to hide the cheap sprat from their menu, while others inflated the prices so that a portion of the fish costs 3.50, MonitorBg writes.
However, the search for sprats by visitors did not end and some restaurateurs decided to find a replacement, offering their customers chamomile, anchovies or duck.
The latter are caught near the shore by fishermen, as long as the water is not too warm. In such cases, the fishermen went inland to look for coolness, local anglers explain.
As temperatures are currently high, unsatisfactory catches are observed. That is why traders are forced to import fish from our southern neighbors. At the same time, frozen Norwegian mackerel for seven or eight levs per kilo can be found at the fish market in Varna. A kilogram of Mediterranean horse mackerel costs about ten levs.
On the other hand, a kilo of gyumyusha, which is smaller than sprat, costs two levs. It was this type of fish that was consumed as warm bread. Sprat and anchovy are a little more expensive - about 3 BGN / kg.
The price of a mullet is five levs per kilo, and a kilo of harib costs 4 levs. To get a kilo of Mediterranean bonito, you will have to count twelve levs. The Cheromore shark, the zargan and the horse mackerel would be more or less the same. Sea bream and sea bass cost 15 leva per kilo.
Carp (BGN 7 / kg), grass carp (BGN 8 / kg), trout (BGN 10 / kg), pike, sardines (BGN 4 / kg) can also be found on the stock exchange.), rattlesnake and silver carp (3 BGN / kg), catfish (8-12 BGN / kg), etc.
If desired, mussels, squid and caviar can be bought here. The prices on the fish market may be more affordable for the average Bulgarian, but on the other hand the prices in the pubs and restaurants in Varna are like at the peak of the summer season.
