It turns out that one of the most preferred fish on the Bulgarian table in recent years - pangasius, is poisonous. The natural habitat of Vietnamese fish is the heavily polluted Mekong River. Hazardous chemicals and industrial waste are dumped into the water basin. Several independent studies have shown that fish imported from Vietnam are full of poisons and bacteria.
The river dweller mainly consumes faeces flowing into the river from the dozens of settlements located along the Mekong River. This also makes it highly toxic. Even arsenic, a known poisonous metalloid, was found in several shipments of pangasius on its way to Europe.
In recent years, pangasius has replaced the most common species of carp and mackerel in Bulgaria. A kilo of the Vietnamese miracle is offered at an extremely low price. In most retail chains a kilo of pangasius is traded up to BGN 4.
Consumers complain that fish fillets often have a marshy taste, even when cooked. This defect cannot be found in the store. The responsible institutions advise us to contact the importer to find out about the batch.
Especially on the issue of mass import of pangasius and the quality of this product since 2007 a group of producers, traders, scientists and non-governmental organizations called Pangasius Aquaculture Dialogue has been formed. Their aim is to adopt quality standards to ensure sustainability in the sector and safety for consumer health.
According to experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), there are no imported fish with toxic content in Bulgaria. Years ago, during the investigation of the signal, officials from the Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture confirmed that a radioactive pangasius, imported from Vietnam, had been detected.
Despite the criticism, many in the industry are of the opinion that rumors of the poisonous pangasius are the work of competing fish producers.
The goal is to create mistrust among people and reduce the market share of Vietnamese fish. According to the latest data, pangasius is the most bought fish in Bulgaria in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
