From 1 June 2016, the sale of energy drinks for people under 18 will be banned in Latvia. This was decided at its last sitting by the country's parliament.
According to the new legislative changes, retailers will require an identity document with which people in a country can certify that they have reached the age of majority before buying an energy drink.
The new law was introduced on the recommendation of doctors who warn
that energy drinks lead to addiction and hyperactivity, which can encourage young people to use drugs as well.
Energy drinks contain caffeine in excess of 159 milligrams per liter and stimulants such as taurine, inositol, guarana alkaloids, ginkgo extract.
Caffeinated beverages will be banned from sale in all schools in the country.
Advertising for energy drinks will also be limited. Each of them will have to warn about the dangers of excessive consumption.
Energy drink brands will also be banned from sponsoring sporting events.
In making this decision, Latvia followed the example of neighboring Lithuania, which banned the sale of energy drinks to persons under 18 in 2014.
However, the Latvian Advertising Association objected to the decision, saying it was adopted in violation of the European Union's free trade law.
Such a restriction will affect not only advertisers but also the competitiveness of Latvian business.
The association called on the Latvian government to review the new law. They are confident that public health will not improve through the introduction of such extreme measures.
The letter to the deputies in the country is accompanied by a text of the food safety body EFSA, which says that the intake of caffeine up to 400 milligrams a day is safe.
