Bulgarians rank 18th in the European Union in terms of alcohol consumption, according to which our people are among the nations that drink the least. We have spent only 1.6 percent of our total income on alcohol.

Eurostat data show that Bulgaria is one of the member states where alcohol spending has fallen the most in the last 10 years.

The report includes studies for a total of 25 EU member states. Studies show that most alcohol is consumed in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and least in Italy, Greece and Spain.

Annual statistics show that Europeans have spent almost € 139 billion on alcohol, equivalent to 0.9% of the EU's gross domestic product.

In the countries that drink the most, the money spent on alcohol has reached nearly 5% of total monthly income.

Poland and the Czech Republic are also among the countries with the most drinking. Finland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Luxembourg also reach the top 10.

In the middle of the ranking are Sweden, Cyprus, France, Slovenia, Denmark and the United Kingdom. The least money for alcohol is spent in Spain - 0.9% of total monthly income.

An important clarification is that this money does not include the cost of alcohol in restaurants and hotels. Homemade alcohol is also not included in the statistics.
