Eggs contaminated with the dangerous insecticide fipronil have been found in 16 countries of the European Union and China, the European Commission, which is investigating the case, has announced.

Among the countries affected are Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, France and our neighboring Romania.

At the moment, the person responsible for the crisis cannot be named, and the EC has called on Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium to stop exchanging accusations.

An extraordinary meeting between the agriculture ministers of the member states was scheduled for the case, which will take place on September 26. Until then, the EU's governing bodies hope the passions will subside.

The meeting will be chaired by EU Food Commissioner Vitenis Andryukati. The meeting must end the exchange of mutual accusations.

Authorities in Brussels last attacked the Netherlands, saying they knew about the infected eggs last year but did not warn anyone.

In addition to food safety ministers, he expects quality observers to be present.

Millions of eggs have been withdrawn from EU markets in recent weeks, but it is not known how many of the infected batches have been consumed.

So far, the EC does not claim that the products that have been exported are dangerous, but only that it has been observed that eggs from closed farms have been exported there. Further studies are needed to ensure that eggs and dried products contain high doses of fipronil.

However, after the scandal, the consumption of eggs decreased worldwide. It is most noticeable in Germany, where the consumption of eggs has decreased by almost a quarter, said the sociological agency YouGov.
