Five dairy companies were fined by the Commission for Protection of Competition because their yoghurt buckets were identified as unfair competition.
The goods of the disloyal producers had an emblem of Bulgarian yoghurt according to a Bulgarian state standard, without actually meeting the standard.
The decision of the CPC is that this information is misleading for consumers, and the product itself is sold at a higher price without meeting the described quality.
The sanctioned producers are United Dairy Company EAD, Komplekstroy EOOD, Dimitar Madjarov - 2 EOOD, Polydei - 2 OOD and the state-owned LB Bulgaricum EAD.
The fines amount to 0.1% of the net revenues of the companies for 2016, ranging between BGN 11,800 and 74,186.
The five companies pack their products in polypropylene buckets instead of polystyrene, as required by BDS. Polypropylene is used for packaging other yogurts and is cheaper than polystyrene.
However, the producers challenge the Commission's decision because, in their words, the yoghurt in a polypropylene bucket does not differ in quality and composition from the requirements of BDS.

Manufacturers have submitted tests from accredited laboratories, which show that chemicals from polypropylene packaging do not affect the composition of the product.
Beneficial lactic acid bacteria grow equally well in both polystyrene and polypropylene packaging while maintaining their unique ratio, according to their official statement.
However, the CPC is adamant that this is unfair competition, as other companies comply with BDS in packaging as well.
