The Burgas District Court imposed a maximum fine of BGN 1,000 on a company from Kameno, in whose workshops a dangerous GMO soybean was found for sale.

The magistrates confirmed the full amount of the sanction, which was imposed by the inspectors of the Food Safety Agency during a surprise inspection.

The inspection found that the workshop stored 22 tons of soybeans imported from Ukraine. It was delivered to Bulgaria through Plovdiv Customs by the company Tsaratsovo.

Soybean samples have shown that its GMO content is several times above the permissible levels, which makes it extremely dangerous for consumption.

According to the regional director of the BFSA-Burgas, Dr. Georgi Mitev, the labels of soybeans do not even explain that they contain genetically modified organisms, which is in absolute violation of the Food Act in our country.

Before the court, the owner of the workshop in Kameno - Tenyo Tenev said that he was not aware of the presence of GMOs in the product, as the Ukrainian side did not notify about this fact.

However, the magistrates of the Burgas court were adamant that the ignorance of the soy content did not exonerate him. The court also emphasized that he was obliged to examine the goods before packing them and directing them for sale on the Bulgarian markets.

According to the BFSA, of the 22 tons of soybeans delivered to Kameno, about 500 kilograms remain. Soybeans have been discontinued. The workshop in Kameno, where products were cut and processed, was fined.

Global soybean consumption is on the rise, according to a report by the International Grains Council last month. Production is nearly 1 million tons higher than last year.
