Have you ever wondered what is the story of our favorite sweet treats, namely cookies?
Initially, biscuits were preferred by sailors because they took up little space and provided them with the necessary energy. But on long journeys there were problems with their storage and so, to make them longer lasting, they were first baked in an oven and then dried on low heat.
Hence their name - bis, which means double, and soquere, which means bake - because they were prepared as double baked.
Gradually new ingredients were added - the Greeks seasoned them with dried fruit, the Persians - with spices, the Chinese prepared them with rice and sesame flour, and the Egyptians - with millet flour.
In the 18th century, the biscuits we knew were already made with sugar, chocolate, butter, cream and fruit, and thus became the famous French biscuits petit beurre.
The pretzel is distinguished by its shape - round, with a hole in the middle. Its name comes from Turkish and means brittle.
The ingredients of the pretzels changed depending on the time in which they were prepared. During periods of fasting, they were prepared with honey and honeydew, and eggs and butter were added for Easter. Their dough is thicker and softer than that of biscuits and is always kneaded by hand.
Whatever these small delicacies are called - biscuits or pretzels, they are undoubtedly a favorite delicacy in our daily lives.
