For years, a diet rich in vegetables and olive oil (the so-called Mediterranean diet) was considered one of the healthiest ways to eat. A new study refutes this - it turned out that food in the Scandinavian countries is much more useful.
The foods that Scandinavians rely on are fruits and vegetables, lots of fish, seafood and meat. In general, this cuisine is very different in taste from the Bulgarian.
Nutritionists even believe that the way Scandinavians eat will not only help us stay in shape and not gain weight, but will also protect us from cardiovascular disease.
To compare the two Mediterranean and Scandinavian diets, Finnish scientists decided to conduct a study that included 166 people with weight problems. Participants are volunteers from Finland, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and are divided into two groups.
Professor Matti Uusitup of the University of Eastern Finland led the study. The researchers gave both groups to eat foods with the same number of calories, but one group ate according to the Scandinavian regime and the other group according to the Mediterranean. The experiment lasted half a year.
The results were eloquent enough to declare that it was the Scandinavian diet that was healthier. The group with the so-called Mediterranean diet had lower cholesterol levels by up to 9%.
Those with Scandinavian cuisine achieved a 4% reduction in bad cholesterol, but also showed another improvement - reduced levels of compounds that cause heart disease, as well as inflammation of the blood (associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes).
The main difference between the two types of diet is that in the Scandinavian regime the consumption of substances that can cause heart problems is reduced to a minimum.
American scientists claim that in order to protect ourselves from heart disease, it is necessary to follow the following four habits:
1. The most important thing is to give up cigarettes;
2. Their next suggestion is to maintain a normal weight;
3. To follow a proper and healthy diet;
4. To do regular exercises;
American scientists concluded after their study that if we live this way for 8 years we can improve our health and reduce the risk of various diseases by as much as 80%.
