From today (April 1) all meat products and meat preparations must be offered with the new labels, which mention all the data on the origin of the meat, reminded by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA).
From today on the label must contain the content of fat, water, salt. There must be data on when the meat was frozen and on the country of origin of the meat.
When the meat is from an animal that has lived in more than one country, then the age and weight of the animal will be considered. Then the labels instead of Country of origin will say Raised in… The ordinance has established clear rules under which circumstances determine the country in which the slaughtered animal was raised.
If only the origin is indicated on the meat labels - e.g. France, this would mean that the meat was obtained from an animal raised and slaughtered in France.
In cases where the animal has been slaughtered in a country other than that in which it was kept, the label will additionally state Slaughtered in. A batch code will be indicated to identify the meat.
In certain circumstances, the labels may indicate all the countries in which the animal has been kept, or it may simply say Raised in several EU Member States or outside the EU.
Until now, the new requirements for meat labels were mandatory only for beef and pork, but as of today they apply to all types of meat - fresh, frozen or chilled. The requirement will not only apply to meats that have already undergone heat treatment in restaurants.
Potential allergens such as milk, soy, eggs, wheat, sesame, etc. should be clearly marked on the label. Some of the restaurants and places to eat have already made a supplement to their menu, which lists the food additives that can cause food allergies.
The ordinance on the new meat labels and cuts was adopted a year after Europe was rocked by a mega-scandal with horse meat offered in stores as beef.
It is expected that the change of labels will not affect the price of meat and meat products, commented the Association of Meat Producers in Bulgaria.
