New European rules on minced meat labels come into force this year. The new requirements oblige producers and traders to write on the packaging of minced meat the exact fat content in it.
This will not be the only change in the labels of minced meat that the Bulgarian state will introduce before 2014. At the end of the year, additional details will be added, such as the origin of the meat from which the minced meat is made.
Thus, Bulgarian consumers will know whether the minced meat for their favorite fried meatballs is made from pork from happy pigs from Denmark, Spain or the Netherlands and beef from England.
Special requirements are introduced for the font of the information, taking away the possibility for traders and manufacturers to formally comply with the letter of the regulation, but to publish the information in hard lower case, which would confuse customers.
The percentage of fat must be written on the labels of the minced meat, depending on whether the minced meat is lean, only beef, only pork, a mixture of several types of meat, etc. A novelty is the mandatory prescription of the ratio of creatinine to meat protein.
According to the requirements of the European directive, which came into force on January 1, 2014, minced meat will contain only pure boneless meat product, which will not contain improvers, preservatives, soy or other substances. Up to 1 percent salt will be allowed.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food reminds Bulgarian meat producers and meat processors that "minced meat" and "minced meat" are synonymous names for the same product. All the requirements for minced meat will apply in full force to the packaged minced meat.
However, the new regulation does not affect products such as ready-made meatballs and kebabs. There will be no restrictions and the use of various additives and spices will continue to be allowed, incl. soy, onions, vitamins, enhancers, etc.
The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has already started inspections at retail outlets to see if the new European rules on minced meat labels are being complied with. The BFSA reminds that in case of established violations the fines start from BGN 250 for an individual and reach BGN 6,000 for legal entities.
