More and more people are going to extremes in their quest to eat healthily. Recently, organizations fighting osteoporosis have come up with the position that the trend towards clean eating and dieting will create a generation with extremely brittle bones.
A recent study across the European Union found that four out of ten young people aged 18 to 24 have been on a diet that excludes some of the main food groups, including gluten and dairy products.
Experts warn that many young people do not realize that following the fashion trends in nutrition, they endanger their own health. Scientists fear that if this diet continues to grow, bone fractures at the slightest injury will soon be the norm.
The cult of clean eating has been promoted by fashion gurus such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Ella Woodward and food bloggers the Hemsley sisters. The diets that they impose through social media have a series of followers. Celebrities are urging their fans to give up meat, gluten, sugar and processed foods forever in favor of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
However, experts warn that these economical diets put a whole generation at risk of developing osteoporosis - a disease in which the bones become brittle and break easily at a later age.
A study of more than 8,000 Europeans found that 70 per cent of people aged 18 to 35 were on or were on a similar diet. Unsuspectingly, the young people inflicted permanent damage, the first sign of which appeared in the late 1930s. However, then it is too late to take any measures to prevent osteoporosis, experts say.
Without taking urgent action to encourage young people to start consuming all food groups in their diet and avoiding a clean diet, we are facing a future in which broken bones will become the norm, says the study's author. Dr. Lisa Earl of the British Center for Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a painful and disabling condition and young people have only one chance to build healthy bones, she added.
