Associate Professor Dr. Ivan Kiryakov, who is director of the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute, said legumes in the country have declined 10 times in the last 10 years.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the total area of ripe beans in 2012 is 15,414 acres, lentils - 14,112 acres, chickpeas - 10,000, green beans - 3,500 acres, and peas the total area is about 3,400 acres.
These data show that the beans we have consumed in the last 10 years are mainly imported.
Although the report for 2013 is not yet ready, Associate Professor Kiryakov suggests that the areas have decreased, given the planting material that was sold during the year.
The director of the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute reminds that in 1989 the total area of ripe beans in Bulgaria was 390,000 decares.
According to Associate Professor Kiryakov, one of the reasons for this phenomenal decline is the lack of agro-industrial complexes, which years ago obliged work crews to sow a certain amount of beans.
Another reason for the smaller quantities of beans is that to some extent it is a risky crop, because in summer, when temperatures are high, there is a wilting of the flowers of beans.
For the third reason Ivan Kiryakov points out the mechanization in the cultivation of beans, which is incomplete.
In most of the varieties offered on the market, the work is manual, and the dumped prices at which ripe beans are imported in Bulgaria prevent our crops from being sold adequately.
Associate Professor Kiryakov also announced that from 2015, farmers who grow peas, beans, chickpeas and lentils will receive 2% more subsidies as an incentive for the revival of these crops.
In 2013, IASAS tested three varieties of ripe beans - 2 with white and 1 with colorful seeds, which are suitable for direct harvest.
So far, 19 varieties of ripe beans, 13 varieties of lentils, 4 varieties of spring fodder peas, 2 varieties of chickpeas and 1 variety of spring vetch have been created and recognized in the scientific unit of the Agricultural Academy.
