A third consecutive study confirmed the assumptions - we eat poorer quality mozzarella and chocolate than in Western Europe. However, their price in our country is also higher.
The study and its results are the work of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency. The new inspection includes identical products on our and Western European markets. There are over 20% differences in labels and over 40% higher prices with us.
53 food products from 11 food groups were studied. 106 samples were taken between February 21 and April 20. Products sold in Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic were compared. And although in the Czech Republic they also complain about the different standard, in our country there are worse foods than the Czech ones.
40 percent of the products have identical information on the labels. At 13 percent or 25 percent there are differences in composition and nutritional value. These are baby milk and mozzarella.
For soft drinks with orange content of the same company, for example, the lowest fruit content is in our country, as well as in Hungary - 5%, while in Italy it is 12%.
In half of the countries the drink is made with sugar, but in the others, as in our country, they are mixed with a substitute. There is also a difference in carbonation.
Confectionery, pasta, chocolate products and vegetable broth are also different in our country.
There is a difference in taste between five products. These are mozzarella, soft drinks and chocolate. There are physicochemical differences in only one product - formula for young children. In our country it has a higher content of vegetable fats, but with a lower content of macronutrients and vitamins.
The price differences are quite striking. With 22 products, or 42%, the prices in our country are higher. The most shocking case is pasta, which in our country is 166% more expensive than in Italy. Baby food such as mashed vegetables, for example, in our country is 40% higher than in Germany.
