Expired sandwiches, foods containing dangerous E's, improvers and flavors were found during two surprise inspections by the BFSA in Plovdiv schools.
Inspections by Nova TV and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency show that children consume a lot of harmful foods while at school.
The first surprise inspection was in one of the high schools in the center of Plovdiv - Paisii Hilenadrski. As soon as the refrigerator was opened, the inspectors found the first violation - frozen pizzas, dangerous for consumption.
Pizzas contain a lot of E's, antioxidants, enhancers, preservatives, colors, which is unacceptable.
A statement of findings with an act of prohibition and a protocol for responsible storage of foodstuffs were drawn up at the school shop.
At the next school, inspectors carefully check what the sandwiches contain and find that some of the pasta snacks have expired. This is actually the most common disorder they face.
Most pasta snacks spoil quickly - within 24 hours, which is why it often happens that school shops offer expired snacks.
The sandwiches in the second school were not stored in the refrigerator, as stated in the ordinance, but at room temperature. This is unacceptable according to the Agency, as the sandwiches contain yellow cheese and sausage, which require lower storage temperatures.
An owner of one of the school shops said that there was a great injustice in the Healthy Eating Act because the real violators were not targeted by the regulations.
The owner says the ordinance bans the sale of chips and waffles at the school itself, but 10 meters from its entrance, vendors calmly offer the forbidden food to children, making the ban meaningless.
And that's why students continue to eat unhealthily.
The Food Safety Agency states that due to the number of violations found, the inspections in the school shops will become weekly.
