The new school year is a fact. Almost 70,000 Bulgarian children will cross the threshold of schools in Bulgaria for the first time in their lives. But school is not a place where only knowledge and experience accumulate.
Most of the graduates of the schools rely on the school kitchens and chairs for their hot lunch. In this regard, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) announced that intensified inspections in schools are beginning.
BFSA inspectors will thoroughly inspect the kitchen units in nurseries and kindergartens, mothers' children's kitchens, as well as school chairs and buffets throughout the country.
The experts will inspect the delivered and prepared food, stored fruits, vegetables and drinks. Accompanying documents, quality, expiration dates, proper labeling, as well as strict compliance with the rules and shelf life will be monitored.
Particular attention will be paid to staff - in particular whether kitchen workers comply with the requirements to wear special work clothes, shoes and hair straighteners. BFSA inspectors remind that it is not allowed to wear any jewelry on work clothes.
All workers in kitchens and canteens must have certified health records that duly record negative results from tests for Shigella, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and typhoid carriers.
All detected discrepancies will be punished according to the current Bulgarian legislation. The campaign for mass inspections starts today and will last until October 18, when the data from the inspections will be announced.
After this date, the control of the sites will continue to be carried out regularly, according to the existing scheme and imposed practices, explained the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
