Mussels and fish in the native Black Sea coast are completely safe to use. There are no toxic elements in them above the norm.

The latest study on the presence of toxins in seafood clearly proves that it is safe to consume fish and mussels caught in the Black Sea. The same goes for freshwater inhabitants.

The study lasted for a whole year. It was initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Water, and the monitoring covered the Black Sea, Varna and Burgas Lakes, the Danube River and the Mandra Dam.

Specialists have studied some of the most common fish species such as sprat, kaya, mullet, anchovy, zargan and horse mackerel, as well as mussels - all from the Black Sea. Samples of white fish, skobar, catfish, carp, bream, caracuda, cod and rattlesnake were taken from the freshwater pools.

The data reported the highest content of toxins in mussels. After them are the Black Sea fish, and last but not least - those from freshwater. However, their levels are well below acceptable. This means that their consumption does not pose a danger to human health. The permissible values are regulated by the EU.
