This year in Greece they registered low yields of olives and according to forecasts this will increase the price of olive oil, at least until the next harvest is harvested, btv reports.

Importers of olive oil in our country warn that olive oil on Bulgarian markets may have higher prices shortly after the New Year. We import mainly Greek olive oil, which explains the more expensive product that we will buy in 2016.

Miroslav Mihailov from Plovdiv, who imports two tons of Greek olive oil to Bulgaria every year, explains that this year it was difficult to supply because the demand was high and the supply was low.

Since 2012, the industry has noted that the consumption of olive oil in our country has jumped twice. According to official data, more and more Bulgarians prefer to replace the oil with olive oil, which is said to be a healthier alternative.

Meanwhile, Turin police launched an investigation into seven brands of Italian olive oil last month. There is a suspicion that the bottles in question offer lower quality olive oil than advertised.

These are the brands Carapelli, Bertolli, Santa Sabina, Coricelli, Sasso, Primadonna and Antica Badia, which are sold as 100% extra virgin.

According to Italian media, samples of the products of the above companies show that they violate EU rules for labeling the highest quality olive oil, writes the Guardian.

Coricelli claims that the accusations come from professional tasters who would not be able to accurately determine the quality of the product according to the standards.

Before being placed on the market, the problem batch is carefully examined either by the company or by independent laboratories. The data show that the product meets the requirements, according to the official opinion of the company.

Extra virgin olive oil is of the highest quality and therefore the highest price on the market. It is released only during the first cold pressing of the olives and the percentage of acidity should not exceed 0.8%
