A record increase of 55% has registered cabbage this year, according to data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets. Traders believe this is due to the rain-ruined harvest.
The data of the commission show that at the end of November the cabbage is sold for BGN 0.60 per kilogram wholesale. The rise in prices is due to the fact that in many parts of the country the crop has rotted after heavy rains and high humidity.
The appearance of various pests on vegetables also deteriorated its quality and a large part of the multi-leaved vegetables was unfit for sale in a month when traditionally in our country the demand for cabbage is greatest due to the preparation of winter vegetables.
In just one month, cabbage reported a jump in price by 17%.
Apart from cabbage, there was an increase in the price of other fruits and vegetables in November.
Greenhouse tomatoes cost 43% more than a year earlier. Wholesale prices for cucumbers increased by 16.8%. Red pepper jumped 6.7 percent.
On an annual basis, the values for potatoes have jumped by 30%. Wholesale prices of green pepper and carrots are lower.
Oranges and tangerines, whose prices traditionally fall at this time of year, also registered a slight decrease in one month. Citrus fruits were 20% more expensive in October.
More expensive grapes were sold in November, which jumped by 31.6%. High prices were registered by bananas and lemons, which rose by 12%. For apples, the price increase is 6%.
The main food products registered a decrease in prices in November 2014 compared to the same month last year. The cheapest during the year was sugar, whose prices fell by 34%.
The most expensive sugar is sold in Plovdiv, Shumen and Varna, where the kilogram costs between BGN 1.60 and 1.80. Sugar is the cheapest in Pleven and Dobrich, where its price per kilogram is BGN 1.10.
The price of the oil for the last year has dropped by 12 stotinki. The reduction in the price of flour is by 35%, and in the case of dairy products by about 3%.
