The Bulgarian's home bar is always full. Whether there are selected drinks in it or not depends on its owner. We always keep vodka in the fridge, but not whiskey. This is an acquired habit that has its own logical and interesting explanation.

Vodka is the alcohol that we must keep in the refrigerator. The old and common practice is not even questioned. In the home freezer this drink does not freeze, and it is much more pleasant to serve the drink cold.

Storing solid alcohol in a refrigerator undoubtedly has its advantages. That is why vodka is traditionally accompanied by brandy. The reason is that when the ambient temperature drops, the density of the liquid increases and it is poured like oil into the cup. As a result, the vodka left in the ice cupboard acquires a thicker texture, a denser texture and becomes more drinkable when consumed - effects that are definitely liked by its fans.

As much as we are used to vodka in the freezer, it is good to know that such storage has its drawbacks. It is imperative to find the ideal cooling and storage environment that is within 5C to 8C. These are the conditions under which you will get a wonderfully chilled light vodka, without disturbed taste characteristics.

The rule applies to any solid alcohol or liquid that is subject to consumption. However, as the viscosity increases, the tastes and aromas are muted.

As the temperature rises, alcohol releases more volatile substances and compounds. They are felt more easily by our taste buds. However, if the alcohol is too hot, the smell of alcohol can be quite strong. At the same time, if it is too cold, even icy, aromas and flavors can completely disappear. This is not such a big problem with vodka. It generally has a weaker smell and taste. However, whiskey prefers room temperature.

For fans of vodka, the lack of aroma in it is not a big loss and the most important thing is just to be well chilled. However, this does not apply to whiskey, but also to wine.

Connoisseurs of really good whiskeys and wines know that the sense of aroma is just as important as the taste of these drinks. Therefore, they should not be overcooled or frozen.

The whole point of drinking whiskey lies in its aging, which creates more volatile substances. It is they who carry its aroma. In comparison, the volatile aromas in vodka are relatively small. Therefore, if you make the mistake of putting the whiskey in the fridge, it will lose its valuable aroma.

Alcoholic beverages aged in barrels generally have a deeper taste and aroma than vodka. That is why it is good to keep them away from the refrigerator or freezer. So, put a few lumps of ice in the whiskey and enjoy life.
